![]() Kind of felt similar/slightly better compared to pre JXB install. The vibration was still happening at similar speeds but was FAR more tolerable. I centered the driveshaft the best I could using a few washers as spacers for the center carrier mount (leveling) and measuring each side of the center joint for straightness. Came off an Arizona car I believe so there was no corrosion and installation was pretty smooth. This issue is still far from solved though.Īt this point, I figured I would try another OEM driveshaft so I bought a known good from the AZ classifieds. This helped out NOTICEABLEY with vibrations/NVH and oddly did not have any real effect on drivetrain slop. The rubber was in great shape and install was simple. While thinking of the next move, I ordered a used OEM rear differential mount from. I’m extremely frustrated at this point as I’ve removed and reinstalled this driveshaft 5 times collectively. After reinstalling on my car the same issues were present with SLIGHTLY less vibration. He has all OEM mounts.Īt this point I’m thinking this driveshaft is old and may need to be balanced. We did and the same vibrations occurred in his car just not as intense. I asked him to let me test my driveshaft on his car. A friend of mine has a B5 S4 with an OEM driveshaft and zero vibration issues. After reinstalling the driveshaft and centering everything the best I possibly could, the ride was harsh and I started to feel intense (laughable) vibrations at 30-40mph and pretty rough vibration at highway speeds. I ordered a JXB center carrier support (street bushings) and verified that my driveshaft center bearing was spinning free and smooth prior to install. However, I knew the driveshaft clunking around from hard acceleration definitely needed to be addressed in the least. I started with CV’s which unfortunately made no difference. Next up was to replace the driveshaft center carrier mount and CV’s as I thought this might be the cause of vibration at certain speeds. ![]() The only thing I could address next was the 01E transmission which I didn’t have the funds to make any significant repairs if needed there. Things were now starting to feel pretty planted and the slop was at a tolerable amount. Moving forward, I added an AWE DTS Bar and updated Apikol blue snub mount bushing which NOTICEABLY helped out with the bouncing shifter under on/off throttle and shifting. This helped out NOTICEABLY with drivetrain slop but did not have any effect on the vibrations being felt at certain speeds. While in there I also replaced the rear differential carrier bushings (sagging and dry rotted) with Apikol blue inserts. The first thing I did was replace the rear differential (lots of slack) and aftermarket rear CV axles with known good OEM replacements from. Under hard acceleration you could hear the driveshaft bouncing around the center carrier mount since the rubber was degraded and floppy. ![]() My shifter would bounce around and you could feel the slack in the drivetrain between each shift lot’s of play and clunks. You could feel everything in the seat and a little in the steering wheel. At this point, I experienced annoying vibrations from the mid-rear of the car while driving 55-65mph along with excess drivetrain slop under acceleration and shifting. The vibrations and drivetrain slop have improved over time with replacement parts but I’m not quite there yet…Īs a baseline, when I bought the car the following vibration or possible NVH causing items were installed: Stern solid engine mounts, 034 transmission mounts, Apikol rear differential mount (blue bushing) and worn out OEM driveshaft center carrier mount. I’ve owned this car for about 2 years now. I hope those of you out there that have found solutions will share your experience so we can save other folks the hassle of playing musical parts and spending money where they don’t need to. I know many others have and will experience vibration issues with these cars. This is a bit of a novel but I’m now at the point where I feel the need to document everything so I can remember what I’ve done up until this point.
